A 17-inch laptop backpack is not a scaled-up version of a 15-inch bag. The device itself adds 700 g to 1.2 kg, the shell must expand along two axes, and the mass sits farther from the spine. Buyers who treat it as merely a size variant typically return with two complaints: shoulder strap anchors tearing out of the shell, and cartons that no longer fit a standard pallet layer.
At Quanzhou Tianqin Bags Co., Ltd, we quote these programs on a separate cost sheet because the tooling differs.
Where the load actually travels
Follow the force before selecting a fabric. A 17-inch laptop with charger, cables, and a document folder commonly weighs 4.5 kg to 6 kg in the main compartment. That mass hangs from the top handle or rests on the base panel—and both load paths must be engineered.
The weak point in most first samples is the strap anchor. On a 15-inch bag the anchor can be a single box-X stitch into a 600D panel. On a 17-inch bag the same construction sees roughly 40 percent more peak load the moment the wearer swings the bag onto one shoulder. We specify a webbing tape that runs from the anchor over the top edge and down the opposite side, so the pull is shared by two panels instead of one seam line.
The second path is the base. A 17-inch bag standing on a 3mm foam base panel will sag within a season. Our standard for this size class is a 5mm PE board laminated under the lining and stitched into the base seam allowance, with the corner radius held at 25mm so the board does not crease at the fold. The board adds about 60g. It is the cheapest 60g in the whole bill of materials.
Nullum frame. Solum crusta, 1680D nylon balisticus, tabula basalis PE 5mm.
The honest limitation: a full frame fixes back-panel collapse but it does not make the bag comfortable at 10kg. Above about 8kg of real load, a 17-inch backpack needs a load-lifter strap and a wider hip-belt anchor, and most retail price points will not support that hardware package. We tell buyers this rather than quoting a frame that will not solve the problem.
Foam thickness that means something
Buyers often send a spec sheet reading "laptop compartment: padded foam". That is not a specification. Foam has three variables: thickness, density and how it is die-cut.

A 15-inch backpack with 20 litres capacity measures approximately 48 x 32 x 40 cm; 12 pieces fit per carton. A 17-inch bag with 30 litres capacity requires about 62 x 36 x 44 cm, and due to increased depth, quantity per carton often drops to 10 pieces. Unit volume rises by roughly 35 to 45 percent, while pieces per carton decline by about 17 percent. Per container, freight cost per unit may shift by 30 percent or more.
Two factory practices mitigate this. First, we flat-pack 17-inch bags with the frame installed but the back panel not yet fully shaped—recovering 3 to 4 cm of carton depth. Second, we design carton dimensions to match a pallet module *before* the buyer approves retail packaging, not after. A 2 cm excess in carton height can eliminate an entire pallet layer.
The trade-off is genuine. Flat packing imprints fold memory into the 1680D shell, requiring two to three days of use to relax; some buyers note this negatively in unboxing reviews. If your channel is premium retail, absorb the freight cost and pack the bag fully formed.
A specification sheet you can hand to a supplier
Use this list as the basis for a 17-inch inquiry. It is the minimum we need to quote accurately.
Laptop sleeve internal dimensions with tolerance, for example 400 x 285 x 35 mm plus or minus 3 mm
Base board material and thickness, plus corner radius
Frame type and the loaded weight the design must survive
Strap anchor construction and webbing route
Foam thickness front, back and bottom, with density in kg/m³
Shell fabric and the abrasion cycle count it must pass
Zipper brand and size on the main opening, which on this size should be a 10 gauge coil or a number 8 metal
Packed dimensions, pieces per carton and carton gross weight target
