A tech pack (technical package or specification package) is the document that tells a factory exactly how to build your product. A complete tech pack eliminates ambiguity — every dimension, material, hardware piece, stitch type, and construction method is defined.
An incomplete tech pack creates gaps that the factory fills with their own defaults. Those defaults are optimized for factory efficiency and margin, not for your product requirements. Every undefined specification in a tech pack is an opportunity for a factory to make a decision you would not have made yourself.
Construction drawings: Flat technical drawings showing all four sides of the bag (front, back, left side, right side), interior layout, and all feature details. Dimensions marked in millimeters, not approximate. A bag drawn without dimensions is a design sketch, not a tech pack.
Material specification: For each material used — outer shell, lining, foam, webbing — list the material type, weight or denier, color (with Pantone PMS reference), and supplier preference or approved equivalent.
Hardware callouts: Every hardware piece listed with brand, model, size, finish, and color. Attaching photographs of approved hardware samples prevents "similar but not specified" substitutions.
Construction notes: Stitch type (lockstitch, chain stitch, zigzag), stitch density (SPI) per seam type, seam allowance (mm), and reinforcement specifications for high-stress attachment points.
Colorways: If the bag is produced in multiple colors, a colorway chart showing the material-to-color mapping for each combination. A navy outer shell with an orange lining requires explicit documentation — factories default to matching colorways when not instructed.
Thread color and weight: Unspecified thread defaults to the factory's stock thread in a color the line supervisor considers acceptable. A bag with khaki thread on a navy outer panel is not obviously wrong until it is obvious — after production.
Laptop compartment interior dimensions: The external dimensions of the bag are specified. The internal dimensions of the laptop compartment — the actual space available for the device — are frequently omitted. A laptop compartment spec'd as 28cm x 20cm external may be 26cm x 18cm internal after lining and foam padding.
Hardware attachment method: How a D-ring is attached to the bag — through a bartack loop, a riveted plate, or a sewn webbing loop — determines load capacity and appearance. Unspecified attachment defaults to the factory's easiest method.
Base reinforcement: Whether the bag base uses a board insert, a TPU bottom plate, or fabric-only construction affects how the bag sits, how it wears at the bottom, and how it protects contents from surface moisture.
The cost of missing specifications is paid in sample revision rounds, production disputes, and shipment holds. Each revision round costs 10–14 days of calendar time. A shipment held for specification non-conformance can cost thousands in warehouse storage and missed season windows.
The investment in a complete tech pack — which requires 2–4 hours of additional specification work per bag style — is recovered in the first avoided revision round.
The buyer should own the tech pack, not the factory. A factory that creates the tech pack on the buyer's behalf builds in their own construction preferences and material defaults. The buyer who receives a factory-created tech pack and approves it without review is endorsing specifications they may not understand.
If your team does not have technical design capability, hire a freelance bag technician to create or review the tech pack before production. This is a one-time cost that scales across every production run using that specification.
